Central America

Central America has been a major focus of WOLA’s work for over two decades.  While the political violence of the 1970s and 80s has subsided significantly, Central America still faces serious challenges in the consolidation of democracy, protection of human rights, economic development and in ensuring accountability and transparency in government.  In recent years, WOLA’s work in the region has focused on supporting threatened human rights defenders, monitoring democratic processes, investigating youth gang violence, and analyzing the impacts of the Central America – Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement with the United States (CAFTA).
